ABOUT HENRY KAPONO'S ARTIST 2 ARTIST SERIES
The launch of this new format will continue to feature multiple award-winning and GRAMMY® nominee, Henry Kapono, who will introduce a new opening segment that will spotlight many of Hawai`i’s diverse and talented musical entertainers, followed by some of Hawai`i’s most iconic musicians. Henry will “jam” and “talk story” one-on-one with each artist, “deconstructing” their career (as only one artist to another can do) to give the audience insight to the spirit and aspirations of the person/people behind the music.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Kapena, considered to be one of Hawaii’s premier island bands has more than 20 Island Music CDs to their credit. Although the band has been through some changes, its founding member, Kelly Boy De Lima is still the band leader. Kapena continues to be an institution that embraces what islanders fell in love with when fans first heard the unique sound of their “electrifying” Kapena music. In the early 2000s, Kelly Boy introduced Hawaii to the next generation of Kapena, his three children, Kapena, Kalena and Lilo. With the next generation came a new, fresh Kapena sound. Kelly Boy’s three children have gained success of their own, writing new original music and being nominated and winning multiple Na Hoku Hanohano awards. In October 2017, Kapena released their first full length album as a family band. The album titled “Palena Ole” won the group four awards at the prestigious Na Hoku Hanohano Awards in May 2018 including Album Of The Year and Group Of The Year. This new Kapena band offers a diverse new package for the old diehard Kapena fans as well as a new generation of Kapena fans.
Having a deep-rooted love for music inspired by his musical family and his musical journey began during his college years while attending Linfield College in McMinnville, Oregon. He began writing his own music and discovering a vast interest in music. Upon returning home to Hawai`i in 2013, he has been a professional musician and entertainer in Hawai’i. He began recording and releasing original music with his band, Eden Roc, earning top spots on Hawaii’s #1 radio stations. In 2016, he started a solo career, performing throughout Honolulu and releasing his first solo album of original songs in the fall of 2019. He continues to perform throughout the islands and abroad.
