This 2021 special edition is in partnership with the Henry Kapono Foundation and dedicated to helping get Hawai`i’s musicians back to work and on stage to do what they love most...perform.

May 27th brings us a special tribute show to the one and only Jimmy Borges, with special guest The Honolulu Jazz Quartet.

ABOUT HENRY KAPONO'S ARTIST 2 ARTIST SERIES
The launch of this new format will continue to feature multiple award-winning and GRAMMY® nominee, Henry Kapono, who will introduce a new opening segment that will spotlight many of Hawai`i’s diverse and talented musical entertainers, followed by some of Hawai`i’s most iconic musicians. Henry will “jam” and “talk story” one-on-one with each artist, “deconstructing” their career (as only one artist to another can do) to give the audience insight to the spirit and aspirations of the person/people behind the music.

JIMMY BORGES
Tony Bennett once said of Jimmy, “Wherever this man goes, follow him. He’s one of the best singers I’ve ever heard.” (Dec. 31, 1985) Jimmy’s musical career ran the gamut of intimate jazz clubs in San Francisco, Vancouver and Montreal, to the showrooms theater and concert halls of New York, Las Vegas, Rio de Janeiro and New Zealand.

A Kalihi-boy born in 1935 of Portuguese/Chinese/Hawaiian descent, Jimmy attended St. Louis College until the age of 12, when his family moved to Oakland where he finished his education at St. Elizabeth’s High School and San Francisco State. Jimmy returned to his island home in 1971, headlining in Waikiki and the Hawaiian islands for over 45 years.

Jimmy also enjoyed being able to be an actor in various roles in the “classic” and the current series of Hawaii Five-0, Jake and the Fatman, and the also-popular TV series Magnum P.I. and McCloud. He is the recipient of the Music Foundation of Hawaii’s Legacy Award for Lifetime Achievement as a vocalist, Lifetime Achievement Award by the Hawaii Academy of Recording Arts and was named by Honolulu’s esteemed columnist Wayne Harada “as one of fifty notable islanders who made a difference and influenced the entertainment world since Statehood fifty years ago.”

THE HONOLULU JAZZ QUARTET
In its 20th year, The Honolulu Jazz Quartet was founded in 2001 by local bassist John Kolivas with the intent of bringing four like-minded musicians together to create a consistent, indelible sound. The group, including Kolivas on bass, Tim Tsukiyama on sax, Dan Del Negro on piano and Noel Okimoto on drums, has three critically acclaimed recordings and has performed original compositions and creative cover arrangements with the Hawaii Symphony and the finest jazz venues in Hawaii, California and Seattle.
